Ballet is a simple performance style dance originated in the Italian renaissance during the 15th century and became famous in Russia, France, and the United States. Ballet began in renaissance court of Italy in the lavishly celebrated aristocratic weddings, also along with this court decisions and dancers also entertained the people. Advancement in the ballet was done by the French ballet de cour, which also contained other kind of entertainment as verse, music, pageant, speech, song, costume, and décor. The choreography was done based on formal dance steps and performers dressed according to their fashion.

Most well-known dance master of that period was Domenico da Piacenza, and he also taught ballet to other people with the help of his students Guglielmo Ebreo and Antonio Cornazzano. During the 17th century, ballet started flourishing as a performance based dance during the reign of Louis XIV with more advanced dance steps. The five fundamental positions of ballet first appeared in the writings of Pierre Beauchamp, who was then a ballet dancer and choreographer. The first person who made a mix of Italian and French ballet together was Jean-Baptiste Lully and developed a legacy of future ballet. The first school for ballet was started in France and Juliette Blanche taught ballet in the school.

In 18th century, ballet moves improved a lot and became more of serious dramatic performance. Only in this period, ballet movement advanced with more character based and women role in ballet was only secondary. The dancers dress was hoops, wigs, corsets, and big heels and dance composers like Christoph Gluck made a lot of changes in dance moves. Only during this period, ballet got divided into three methods namely demi-caractère, sérieux, and comique. In the early 19th century, great social change happened, which also brought changes in the ballet and dance movements became more romantic.

Ballet dance became more popular in Russia and Denmark during 19th century and short skirt or tutu became more famous in this period. Agrippina Vaganova made ballet more perfect and precise and also led the Vaganova Ballet Academy. In America, ballet created a stronger influence and George Balanchine developed a new method called state-of-the-art in America, also opened a school in New York. Balanchine changed the narrative tradition of ballet and formed more of plot kind of style. Barbara Karinska introduced bias cut in the tutus along with embroidery, appliqué, beadwork, and crochet.
