To be a true baseball player you must learn baseball terms. There are nearly over one hundred different baseball terms that you could learn but there are some in particular which are most important to remember. Without knowing at least the basic baseball terms, you’re not going to have any idea what the other players are talking about. Of the over one hundred different baseball terms there are, there are some that are especially important to become familiar with.

This term describes a team’s best starting pitcher, which is the pitcher that a coach will usually put in the first at the beginning of a game to get their team off to a good start. Backdoor slider is a pitch thrown that may appear to be going out of the strike zone but which can then break back over the plate. This is a tricky pitch that can catch hitters off guard and cause them to strike out. Bing-bang play is a fancy term used to refer to a fielder catching a ball that lands at waist level.

The term caught looking refers to batters being caught out on strikes. This refers to a batter being called out on strikes. Fungos are used to get players on the team warmed up and get their muscles loose, limber and ready to play. Homers are hits that go so far out of bounds the player is able to run around and get a point.

There are some cases where the ball goes so far after being hit that no one even bothers trying to catch it, because it goes into the stands for instance or out of bounds and it’s a given home run, or homer. The term pepper is used when a player bunts grounds to teammates who are standing about twenty feet away. To pepper, one player stands and bunts grounds to teammates who should be standing about ten to twenty feet away. The term that is used for left-handed pitchers is southpaw.

These are just some of the many different baseball terms that are used. It may seem a bit overwhelming at first just because of the massive number of terms, but as you begin to learn the different baseball terms you’ll start to feel much more comfortable with the game. It can seem hard to take at first with the multitude of terms there are to learn, but you’ll quickly start to get the hang of things. Baseball terms also help to create a bond between players.
