Have Fun With A Kids Worm Farm

September 17, 2010 · by admin2014 ·

If you have kids then you know how much they love to do cool things especially when they get to take part in something with you. Any parent knows that kids are always into the most disgusting things ever and that often includes worms. Most kids have a fascination with worms for some reason and always like to play with them. If your kid likes watching or playing with worms one thing you could do with them is start up a kids worm farm.

You do not even have to get that dirty so there is no worry about that, but you will need to know what you are doing. In just a few easy steps you can set up a worm farm for your kids and have them completely entertained. The kids can help out and enjoy the process too because there is nothing dangerous you have to use. Do not even think about putting any worms in a container before preparing them.

The containers for your worm farm should be appropriately sized depending on how many worms you plan to put in them. The first step to preparing your kids worm farm is to drill holes in the bottom and along the sides at the top. Once you have done this you can start working on the bedding which is what the worms will actually be living in inside the containers. You can use anything from newspaper to dried leaves to make the bedding.

Add in some garden soil and then dampen the mixture before putting the worms in. Now you have finished prepping the containers and all you need is your worms. This is the favorite part for most kids, when they get to toss the slimy worms into their containers. You may even want to let the kids give them each names as they put them in just for an extra bit of fun, even though you are obviously going to get them mixed up and forget soon after.

Never overfeed the worms as this can cause them to die and likely will cause odor problems in the containers as well, from rotting food. Pretty much any garbage they will eat, as they suck on moist and rotting waste. Avoid throwing whole foods in because it will take them forever to eat enough of it and it will just end up sitting there and rotting away, causing odor problems. It is so easy to get a worm farm started up and you can have a great time bonding with your kids and letting them have fun.
